Strong start in '06 expected to slow for home furnishings.

Apr. 5--The home-furnishings industry benefited from an upswing in consumer interest during January, with orders increasing 6 percent from a year ago, according to a monthly survey of manufacturers released yesterday.

Because orders are not likely to keep that pace, BDO Seidman LLP has decided to lower its forecast for 2006.

BDO Seidman is a financial-services company with an office in High Point.

"We are now forecasting a flat to slightly down first half, with a 2 percent increase in the second half of the year," said Ken Smith, the director of furniture services for BDO Seidman.
