Apr. 7--Fires across the Texas Panhandle on Thursday scorched at least 21,450 acres and destroyed 11 homes, said Traci Weaver, spokeswoman for the Texas Forest Service.
Blustery winds, low relative humidity and crispy dry vegetation fueled at least 11 grass fires in Potter, Randall, Gray, Oldham, Donley, Deaf Smith and Wheeler counties, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Wayne Beighle.
Three fires north of Amarillo -- dubbed the St. Francis Complex Fire -- covered 1,800 acres and burned nine homes. The blazes were 100 percent contained late Thursday, Weaver said.
A large fire near the Pioneer Natural Resources Fain Plant, 25 miles north of Amarillo, burned about 14,000 acres, while another fire near Lefors torched 5,000 acres, Weaver said.
The containment status of the fires near the Fain Plant and Lefors was not known late Thursday, Weaver said.
Another fire in Oldham County burned 650 acres and was 100 percent contained Thursday night, Weaver said.
