There are plenty of very capable dishwashers on the market, as our tests bear out. We put 10 full place settings of extremely soiled dishes, glasses, and flatware into the dishwasher without prerinsing, then let them sit overnight before washing them. Most of the models we tested did an excellent job despite these challenging conditions.
You can get this high level of performance on some models priced as low as $350, but figure on paying closer to $500 to get excellent washing plus quiet operation and convenience features such as an adjustable top rack and tines that fold down to make room for large items.
