The most important development for Champ Car this year might not be in Champ Car at all but in its support series, now officially titled Yokohama Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.
The sanctioning body wants to make Atlantic a breeding and training ground for a whole new wave of teams and drivers to repopulate the Champ Car ranks. To make the racing more economically palatable and competitive, power increases to 300 hp in the series while costs are slashed.
If the initial response is an indication, phase one of the plan is a success. Swift took 41 orders for its new 016.a chassis and has delivered 31. It appears at least 26 car-and-driver combinations will debut at Long Beach, an impressive show for a first-year formula.
Paul Newman joins longtime Can-Am and Trans-Am driver and friend Eddie Wachs to field a two-car team for American Joe d'Agostino and Daniel Gaunt of New Zealand. Driver Alan Sciuto takes over Katherine Legge's seat at Jim Griffith's Pole-star Racing Group out of Chardon, Ohio.
