Goethe's Campagne in Frankreich 1792 was published in 1822. The campaign itself had ended before the regicide and the Terror, and Goethe's account of it was written after the installation of the Metternich regime at Vienna and Troppau and the muzzling of German intellectuals by the Karlsbad decrees. Between the campaign and the account Prussia collapsed, was dismembered, and reconstituted; the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation faded into historical ignominy; the imperial armies of the Revolution occupied Moscow and the cavalry of the Tsar were quartered in Paris.
