Apr. 2--In a tiny wetland in the shadow of Interstate 485, scientists are cataloguing wildlife to publish a field guide. Those scientists happen to be sixth-graders at Jay M. Robinson Middle School in south Charlotte. Next weekend their teacher, Janice Ward, will collect a $10,000 national science teaching prize, honoring the way she helps her kids explore the world and their own potential. "I'm teaching scientists," Ward likes to say. "I'm not teaching science." Ward wants to give her students the skills and confidence to find their own answers to important questions. She wants to unlock their passions and help them realize they have something to contribute. "Middle-schoolers truly want to change the world," she says. "It is who they are."
