Permit me to start off with an old grievance. We just keep better records of our sports life. I attempted a rehash of some of our achievements in the history of the Commonwealth Games some two weeks ago and found myself in conflict with some of the facts. Good friends like Ikeddy Isiguzo were on hand to straighten out the graying memory. In the end, only a lengthy excursion into the limitless resources of the Internet eventually eased the situation, though not entirely as some of the important details were still omitted.

All the same, one could not but remember some of the Commonwealth Games which left a deep impression. The Christchurch Games, of course, stands out being the first and only one that I covered during my days as a reporter. But, apart from that, it had other unique aspects that are unforgettable. It also took me on the longest journey I have ever made, and could possibly make since it took place at the antipodal area to Nigeria. It also offered me the unique thrill of flying over the North Pole into the "Land of the Midnight Sun".
