The incident in which the presidential aircraft was forced to land in Greece due to a cracked cockpit window is very scary indeed. We are grateful that nobody was harmed in this incident. From preliminary reports, it appears the damage to the plane was not very extensive. Accidents do happen and all of us can live with this.

But where the life of the first citizen is concerned, the expectation is that every effort should be made to ensure that he or she is safe at all times. That should explain why a large chunk of state money is spent on the president's security without any eyebrows raised. The Office of the …
