Mar. 29--DENVER - Elected officials in Las Animas County are angling for pay increases that could bump up their annual salaries by as much as $30,000.
Their effort began when they asked Sen. Ken Kester, R-Las Animas, to carry a bill that would move Las Animas up one notch in the state category system, which determines annual pay for elected county officials.
Those five categories, which are based on population levels, determine annual pay for county commissioners, sheriffs, treasurers, assessors, clerks, coroners and surveyors.
Currently, Las Animas is a Category 3 county but wants to be bumped to a Category 2, which under the current pay grade would give them each approximately $10,000 more a year.
