Open-wheel racing is in trouble? Try telling that to the competitors in the IMSA-sanctioned Star Mazda Championship series, which averaged 38 cars per race in 2005. The stepping-stone series-which has helped launch Scott Speed, Marco Andretti, Graham Rahal, Michael McDowell and 2005 ALMS rookie-of-the-year Guy Cosmo-features the Goodyear-shod Pro Formula Mazda cars, which use a sophisticated carbon fiber tub, six-speed sequential gearbox and a 240-hp Mazda Renesis rotary engine. The car debuted in September 2002 and has been a huge hit since.
The series has a dozen dates scheduled for 2006, paired with the American Le Mans Series, Grand-Am, Champ Car and even Formula One.
The ladder might have gotten a bit easier to climb for Mazda racers with the Feb. 14 announcement Mazda will be the engine provider and a sponsor of the Champ Car Atlantic series, where, incidentally, the 2005 Star Mazda champ, Brazilian Raphael Matos, will race this year.
"Drivers can start in club racing in the steel-chassis, rotary-powered Formula Mazda, graduate to the next level in the carbon fiber-tub professional Formula Mazda, and then to the Mazda-powered Atlantic at the top rung,'' says Robert Davis, Mazda North American Operations senior vice president.
