Surgeon suspected of mercy killings admits removing respirators.

IMIZU, Toyama -- A surgeon is suspected of euthanasia at a hospital here has reportedly told hospital officials he removed the artificial respirators of numerous patients.

The 50-year-old surgeon reportedly made the admission while discussing the incidents with officials at Imizu Municipal Hospital in Toyama Prefecture. If the allegations of euthanasia are proven to be correct, the case could shape out to be one of the biggest of its kind in Japan.

Imizu Mayor Shizuo Bunke held an emergency news conference at the city hall shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in front of a group of about 30 reporters.
