Mar. 28--The Rev. Joe Wright, Central Christian Church's senior pastor whose outspokenness on moral issues earned him praise and criticism, has announced he will retire.
Under Wright's nearly 20-year leadership, Central Christian became the largest Protestant church in Wichita, with an average weekend attendance of more than 3,000.
His leadership among evangelical clergy put him in the forefront of anti-abortion efforts during the 1991 "Summer of Mercy" abortion protests. Last year, he was among the visible religious leaders pushing for an amendment to ban gay marriages and civil unions in Kansas.
Wright, 63, announced to the congregation earlier this month that his retirement as senior pastor is effective July 1. He said he would continue to preach at services until a successor is in place.
"I just feel that it's the right time," said Wright, who has been a pastor for 35 years.
Wright said his health and wanting to spend more time with Lois, his wife of 44 years, were the reasons for his retirement. He underwent quadruple-bypass surgery about a year and a half ago and is going to have both knees replaced in upcoming surgeries.
