Mar. 26--An Asheville man charged in two attacks is now a "person of interest" in an unsolved Buncombe County homicide, authorities said Saturday, bringing to four the number of cases authorities are investigating.

Derek Morris Colson, 39, was arrested last week in connection with the 2004 beatings of two women, one of whom died, in Catawba County.

He is charged in the death of 49-year-old Cynthia Lail and the beating of another woman, now 43, who survived but suffered brain damage. Hickory police said they may charge him in the March 2004 beating death of a third woman, Betsy Dickens. No charges had been filed as of…
