It is the middle of November, and France seems to be in the throes of a Segolene Royal frenzy. A camera crew from the leading television channel TF1 is trailing her, a team from the best-selling weekly Le Nouvel Observateur is working on a long profile of her, and she has already been nicknamed "Segolene Superstar" by the French daily Le Parisien.
Less than two months ago, Royal, France's most popular female politician, raised the possibility that she might run for president in 2007, and I have come to Le Mans, Sarthe, to see her in action at the French socialist-party convention.
