Freight forwarders are picking up steam in '93. (Industry Overview)

The Fritz Cos. of San Francisco topped the Business Times' List of the region's 25 largest freight forwarders, followed by the Harper Group of San Francisco in the No. 2 spot.

The health of the freight forwarding industry generally mirrors the worldwide economy since forwarders make money by coordinating the delivery of cargo, generally imports and exports. In 1992 freight forwarders locally saw a stagnant market, but say that the market has been improving monthly in 1993.

Overall, freight forwarders on The List shipped 137,623 metric tons of cargo a month through the Bay Area in 1992 and employed 1,400 people locally.
