The market-leading desktop publishing program since its introduction in 1985, PageMaker has recently suffered an image crisis, as the professional publishing crowd defected to Quark Xpress. Although Aldus still owned the Windows retail channel, and was still strong in the Macintosh channel, Quark was clearly gaining ground. To counteract, Aldus launched a company-wide effort to improve its flagship product, culminating in the release of PageMaker 5.0 in June.
