Since independence, Kenyans have been treated to beautifully-crafted reports on poverty and economic projections. The most recent ranked Ganze constituency, Coast, as the poorest of the country's 210 constituencies.

It is unfortunate that successive governments have ignored the root causes of poverty and other ills bedevilling Kenyans. Equally, it is unfortunate that poverty statistics are drawn up by "experts" who have never known want.

Analysing the reports on poverty presented by aid agencies, one wonders why millions are spent in workshops in posh hotels when the money could make …
