Mar. 15--Google and the government squared off in federal court Tuesday in a key test of privacy rights for Internet users, with the California-based search giant winning what appears to be a partial victory.
In a preliminary ruling, a federal judge expressed concern that the government was going too far in asking Google to turn over millions of examples of online search results. However, he was prepared to order the company to comply with a sharply narrower request for information.
Google Inc. is the only major Internet search company to refuse the government's original request, which sought to examine how computer users behave online as part of an investigation into pornography.
