By the end of this year, 45 million travellers will have passed through the most modern airport in Asia, which is also to handle three million tonnes of cargo.

Located about 40 kilometres from the present airport at Don Muang and spread over about 8,000 acres, Suvarnabhumi Airport has aims of being a civil aviation hub in Southeast Asia, and is expected to deal with up to 100 million passengers and 6.4 million tonnes of cargo annually when using its full capacity in a few years' time.

The government hopes that it will have been officially opened to commercial flights by September.
