Mar. 6--Twelve white markers dotted Mike Geldreich's feet as he strode between blue lines taped to the floor. Fifteen cameras were trained on his feet, capturing his gait, his bones and joints in 120 pictures per second. A year ago, Geldreich, 39, of Slinger had surgery at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital for the excruciating pain in his right toe. That day, physicians noticed he walked on the outside of his foot to compensate for the injury. Now he is one of 40 participants in a Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin study that aims to better predict which foot and ankle conditions would benefit the most from surgery. On this day in mid-February, as Geldreich's stride was examined, two physicians and a motion analysis engineer huddle over a computer, making sure it had captured all the data.
