Mar. 5--LAKE ALFRED -- Stacy Otte doesn't quite know what she'll do after the Homer K. Addair Career Academy is converted into a traditional school.
Her children, Melody, 16, and Cleve, 14, have thrived at the nontraditional school that has offered smaller classrooms, vocational training and given second chances to some students who were falling behind at other schools.
The Polk County School Board voted last week to go along with its staff's plans to convert the facility into a traditional middle school next academic year, opening up hundreds more seats in the crowded district where classroom space is at a premium. Despite success stories here and there, officials say, the school was failing.
