WILSON: Much more than that 9-7X Chevrolet truck I drove last week, this car feels like a real Saab. Yes, I know it's nearly as much an Opel as the 9-7X is a Chevy, but for a guy who cut his teeth in this business driving hatchback 90s and 900s in the mid-1980s, this 9-3 drives like a Saab. It's the turbocharger, manual trans and just a touch of torque steer (not like in the bad old days, just a tug now and then), plus the relatively long-travel suspension and a bit of steering play that together say "rally-bred'' for less-than-perfect surfaces. As a hatchback motorcar it feels like a big brother to the (Subaru-based) 9-2X, which, of course, is also a rally-bred car. But this is a six-banger, so you don't need to work the engine into the higher rev band or dial up a lot of boost to get out of your own way, as we used to do in the old Saab 2.3 turbo cars.
