The first two national events of the NHRA season have been a banquet for the supporting players from last year's championship races and a veritable famine for most of the biggest hitters in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock.
For instance, reigning and three-time Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher has been shut out in the 2006 win column after dominating qualifying at the season opener in Pomona, California, and repeating that act at round two in Phoenix. Schumacher teammate Melanie Troxel won at Pomona and nearly again at Phoenix, losing to "Hot Rod'' Fuller in the final, 4.563 seconds at 321.42 mph to 4.589/ 318.92. It is Fuller's second national event win as a pro.
Defending Funny Car champion Gary Scelzi has been anything but invincible this year, with a grand total of one round win in two events. Tommy Johnson Jr. picked up the Phoenix victory by out-finessing John Force in the final when both cars lost traction, 5.225/249.76 to 5.705/294.69.
Warren Johnson loosened the ongoing stranglehold of three-time Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson when Anderson had to shut off in the final round, sending Johnson to his 96th career national event win.
Open-wheel bosses deny merger
AutoWeek's confirmation of recent meetings between IRL and Champ Car principals (Competition, Feb. 27) generated excitement in the racing community, but IRL founder Tony George hasn't joined in.
"It was a one-day story,'' George said. "We've talked a little about our industry, but nothing serious. Pretty casual, no real agenda.''
