Dot One: In the buildup to the Daytona 500, NASCAR announced plans to use unleaded gasoline in 2008. NASCAR has had an exemption from the ban on leaded gasoline for 15 years now. In only two more years, though, NASCAR says it will be ready to get the lead out. Lead is a potent neurotoxin-it kills brain cells-suggesting many easy jokes. Space is limited, though, so make 'em yourself.

Dot Two: In roughly the same period General Motors launched an ad campaign-Live Green, Go Yellow-to tell us it makes 14 vehicles that can run on gasoline or E85 (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline).

Dot Three: On Friday of Daytona weekend in the Craftsman Truck Series, Dots One and Two met on the track in the Flex Fuel E85 Silverado in a race dubbed the Flex Fuel 250, sponsorship courtesy of GM. Part of the deal is a fleet of pace and support vehicles for NASCAR events, and they really do run on E85, but we know (see Dot One) the No. 85 truck races with leaded gas in its tank. But wait, the ironies are richer and more layered than you may yet recognize.
