The LCX-111C HD, which replaces the LCX-104C as the flagship of Lowrance's (800/324-1356; lowrance.com) line, has a display with a pixel count about 25 percent higher than the 104. It also has enough computer power to wrangle the extra dots into a sonar picture or one of the maps or charts from the hard drive's library.

Virtually every map and chart Lowrance offers comes loaded on the hard drive, and owners have complete access to them all with no additional fees. The unit has two slots for MMC or SD memory cards containing the newest Navionics cartography. Or, blank cards can be inserted to record the scrolling sonar picture and GPS data during fishing trips.
The LCX-111C HD has a sturdier mounting bracket with a broader base and a tilt mechanism with square cogs instead of the usual V-shaped ratchet teeth. The cogs keep the heavy unit from self-adjusting as the boat hammers through rough water.
STEADY WITH CLEAR READINGS--DEEP AND SHALLOW
We tested the unit with the single-frequency (200 kHz), 20-degree Skimmer transducer because we feel it's a better match for most freshwater fishing than the dual-frequency (50/200 kHz) transducer.
