The Nasdaq rebounded from Tuesday's steep losses with a 1.5% gain on higher volume. Advancers led decliners by an 11-to-5 ratio.
Chipmakers and other technology stocks led the way up.
Atheros Communications gained 2.52, or 12%, to 23.10 on more than 3 1/2 times typical trade -- good for an all-time high.
OmniVision Technologies went up 1.71 to 27.21 on 2 1/2 times usual turnover. After the close, it reported earnings for the fiscal third quarter, ended Jan. 31, of 53 cents a share, a 60% increase from the year-ago period. But shares fell sharply in after-hours trading because the company's current-quarter outlook disappointed.
Chipmaker NetLogic Microsystems climbed 2.47 to 37.82 on more than double normal volume. The stock found support after a pullback to its 10-week moving average.
FormFactor gained 3.86, or 10%, to 40.70, trading higher than average. It gapped up out of a nine-month base Feb. 2 and has been trading tight ever since.
