Midcaps led Wednesday's market as the S&P 400 rose 1.5%.
Small caps followed closely behind, with the S&P 600 up 1.4%.
The S&P 500 rose 0.8% and the NYSE composite 0.9%.
Volume was lower on the NYSE, though breadth was solid. NYSE advancers led decliners by 7-to-3.
Thor Industries surged 2.24 to a new high of 49.44 on more than triple its usual trade. It was the second straight day of a strong gain on heavy volume for the RV and bus maker. On Tuesday, the Ohio-based firm beat earnings estimates.
