Chips Lead Stock Market Rally
1The major indexes recouped all or most of Tues.' losses. The Nasdaq climbed 1.5% and the small-cap S&P 600 rose 1.4%. The S&P 500 gained 0.8%; the Dow added 0.5%. The Philly semiconductor index shot up 4.3%. Volume rose on the Nasdaq, but fell on the NYSE. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 4 basis points to 4.59%. More on this page, B2
ISM: Factory Rebound Continues
2After falling for 3 straight months, ISM's manufacturing index rose 1.9 points to 56.7 in Feb., better than expected. The new orders index hit a 16-month high. Output, backlog and hiring gauges also improved. Price pressures, though still present, eased slightly. It was positive news after Tues.'s lackluster data. See Vital Signs on A2
More Bombings Hit Iraqi Capital
3Attacks killed 26 people in Baghdad and 4 others nearby as sects continued to clash. The Assn. of Muslim Scholars urged Sunnis to protect mosques and accused Shiite leaders of fanning sectarian hate. Doubts spread about U.S. plans to trim troop counts. Saddam Hussein said he gave orders that led to Shiite executions in the '80s after an assassination try but was within his rights to do so.
Bush In India After Afghan Visit
