The Supreme Court heard arguments in a challenge to the 2003 Texas redistricting on Wednesday. Republican control of the House of Representatives may hang in the balance.

The unusual mid-decade effort to redraw the state's congressional district lines briefly turned Texas government into a three-ring circus three years ago. Lacking the votes to block the new political map, Democratic lawmakers fled to Oklahoma to bring all legislative business to a halt.

But Republicans eventually prevailed and the effort paid off big time in the 2004 elections.

Before then, Democrats held a 17-15 edge in the 32-member Texas delegation. Now Republicans dominate the delegation with 21 seats to the Democrats' 11.

A Fighting Chance?

That six-seat swing was critical. Without it, Democrats would have picked up a net four seats in the House in 2004, narrowing the Republican edge to 226 vs. 209.
