Mar. 2--Economic growth could decline by over a full percentage point to 3.5 percent this year if political turmoil remains unresolved, according to a research centre of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.
Thanavath Phonvichai, director of the university's Centre for Economics and Business Forecasting, said if current anti-government protests turned violent and an unconstitutional regime took power, growth could fall to just 3.5 percent due to investor flight and declines in export growth from negative reactions overseas.
Tourism would also be heavily affected by the prospect of violent protests, he said, potentially resulting in the current-account deficit ballooning to over $5 billion.
