NYSE stocks slid 1% Tuesday, with losses spanning many sectors from defense stocks and junior growth to banks, leisure, computers and even food- and utility-related defensive plays.
The S&P 500 and NYSE composite each fell 1%. Volume was higher than Monday, marking a distribution day.
Homex Development fell 3.84 to 34.37 on more than four times average volume. The Mexican home builder's stock dropped below its 50-day moving average intraday, but recovered to close above it. On Monday, Homex reported a 24% fourth-quarter earnings increase.
BJ Services sank below its 200-day line as it shed 1.87 to 31.31 on double its usual trade. Merrill Lynch downgraded the oil-field services firm from buy to neutral.
