Big demand for HIV drugs boosts Aspen Pharmacare Strong rand offsets price freeze Science and Health Editor CAPE TOWN Aspen Pharmacare, Africa's biggest maker of generic medicines, yesterday reported a 34% increase in operating profit to R473,8m for the six months to December, driven by sales of new products and growing demand for its AIDS drugs.

Aspen was the first South African company to secure agreements with multinational pharmaceutical firms to manufacture and distribute copies of their patented anti-retroviral AIDS drugs. Aspen now had 19 generic AIDS drug products in its portfolio and …
