PORT Hueneme, located strategically a short distance north of Los Angeles, has become the largest reefer port on the US west coast as the bigger southern neighbour tries to handle ever-burgeoning volumes of containerised cargo.

Yet, instead of being a default victory caused by operators abandoning over-crowded Los Angeles and Long Beach, industry experts say the rise of Hueneme should be seen in the oppo- site light.
