Former chairman of the International Maritime Organization's Maritime Safety Committee Tom Allan is to provide technical advice to the government of Egypt on a number of maritime safety issues arising from the Al-Salam Boccaccio 98 ferry disaster, writes Michael Grey.

Following a request to the IMO from the Egyptian government, Mr Allan, who was also the UK's permanent representative at the IMO and is now an independent consultant, has been commissioned by the IMO to provide technical advice and support to the Egyptian Ministry of Transport on safety standards related to passenger ships.
