Counting of votes in yesterday's presidential and parliamentary elections got underway last evening but voting continued in some parts of the country. At midnight Yoweri Museveni appeared to be leading the presidential race, with Col. Kizza Besigye putting up a strong performance as his main competitor.
As unofficial results started trickling in soon after the official closure of polls at 5:00pm, kick starting the counting, voting continued in places like Nakasero Market up to 8:00pm. Other polling stations in the city where voting went on into the night include Arua Park, Johnson Street and Shauri Yako.
According to preliminary results from a few polling stations, Museveni , the NRM candidate, was doing very well in the western region, and reasonably well in Buganda and Busoga. FDC candidate Besigye was doing well in the urban areas, in Teso sub-region and in the north. The rest of candidates John Ssebaana Kizito (DP), Miria Kalule Obote (UPC) and Dr Abed Bwanika (Independent) were struggling.
By press time the Electoral Commission (EC) had not released any results at the national tally centre at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole last night.
