Civil servants countrywide have been asked to contribute towards famine relief.

Although the donations are voluntary, some civil servants are being forced to fork out between Sh3,000 and Sh30,000 towards the fund.

The nation's 230,000 public school teachers will each pay Sh30, raising Sh6.9 million. The money is enough to buy at least 172 tons of Unimix with sugar, an enriched blend of grains widely recommended for people weakened by hunger.
