Feb. 24--Though the 80-year-old Belleville High School building holds nostalgic value for many of its alumni, the school is overcrowded and full of maintenance problems, Van Buren Public Schools officials say.
On Tuesday, voters in the district -- which includes Belleville, most of Van Buren Township and portions of Ypsilanti, Canton and Sumpter townships -- will be asked to approve a $111-million bond issue to replace the aging building, which has been renovated nine times. If it's approved, the 2.9-mill, 30-year bond issue would cost the owner of a home with a market value of $225,000 about $326 a year.
