The schools' chess season began at the weekend with over 200 students taking part in the individual competitions. Junior schools, secondary as well as tertiary institutions took part in the event. Ten of the best players will make it to the Under-21 championships at the national coaching clinics.

In the junior schools' section, Thabo Gumpo of Maoka was in an outstanding form and drew only once in nine rounds to emerge tops. Emmanuel Motlalese and Pako Motlaleselelo of Tshwaragano School both scored 7.5 points to finish second and third respectively. Tshwaragano got the best …
