Feb. 23--BRENTWOOD -- Nugget waited patiently as the tiny girl passed a brush tentatively across the chestnut quarter horse's furry winter coat, the girl's helmeted head barely reaching its lower shoulder.

"You want to try to get where the saddle goes," said teacher Melissa Madsen upon a brief inspection of the 6-year-old's grooming technique.

Madsen kept up an authoritative patter as she moved up and down the row of riders, pausing to demonstrate how to pick out a hoof and fasten the cinch that holds the saddle in place. The 32-year-old Brentwood woman has been riding ever since she received a pony for her sixth …
