Academic press or STM publisher? Well, both, really, for this is Sage Publications, which began life 40 years ago in social sciences and has managed to turn itself into one of the top STM publishers in the world.
Sage Publications was started in 1965 by Sara Miller McCune, whose late husband, Gordon McCune, was also involved in the business. Remarkably, the company remains independent, with Miller McCune still its principal shareholder. It has grown both organically and through acquisition and has moved out into new fields from its start in the social sciences, but despite the expansion and commercial success, the company retains a pleasant whiff of 1960s ...
