A project to develop a European search engine with video and audio searching and linguistic translation features has become the subject of an official information blackout after its existence was publicised last month.
Project Quaero (a name derived from the Latin "I search") was cited by French president Jacques Chirac in a new year's address on the economic and social challenges facing France. It would be, he said, a Franco-German-led response to "the global challenge posed by Google and Yahoo".
President Chirac's championing of European perspectives against growing US internet dominance is well documented. Last year he called for a French cultural response to Google's book digitisation project, describing its selection as "Anglo-Saxon library book collections".
