Cilip takes corrective action
Organisations serving the information professional in the UK have been having a rocky time. This time last year, Aslib was dusting itself off after the trauma of its liquidation. It still exists today, but is a shadow of its former glory. We wonder whether a merger with a global-facing professional body - say, the SLA - might be its best eventual outcome.
Most recently, it has been Cilip's turn to impose redundancies and operational cut-backs. The trimming has been painful and wide-ranging, but the hope is that Cilip has done enough to steady the ship - it would be unfortunate if, in six months time, the institute had to take further action, such as closing down special interest groups. Cilip has rightly moved to focus resources on member needs, developing new services to generate revenues. These will be new opportunities for members to show that they care for its survival.
