A number of schools are adopting strict conduct codes for their athletes that set behavior expectations and punish infractions such as sexual assault, drunk driving, battery or violating school policies. Are these codes effective?
Such codes are often enforced by ADs instead of coaches and provide consistency and clear guidelines for interpretation and enforcement, according to proponents. Opponents call the codes of conduct too rigid.
The problem comes when a star athlete gets caught doing something illegal or unseemly, but the coach needs her or him to help win an upcoming contest.
