One day after announcing a new written policy that faculty and staff who get a divorce could be fired, leaders at Oklahoma Christian University officially rescinded it.
The policy aimed to formalize an unwritten rule, according to university spokesperson Ron Frost. "If the employee is not modeling good marriage behavior, then the president will determine the situation and see if there needs to be a parting of ways," he said.
It was not in response to a rash of divorces, but rather to divorce having "reached almost epidemic proportions" and Oklahoma's having a rate significantly higher than the national average.
The initial announcement of the policy drew widespread national attention. "For our constituency," Frost said then, "this is great publicity."
