About 75% of Division I athletes are graduating within six years, according to an NCAA report. That's quite a contrast from a recent report issued by the U.S. Department of Education, which found that only 62% of athletes earned degrees in the same amount of time.
The NCAA figures come from using its own new formula called the Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which does not penalize a school when its students transfer, which about 25% of the 91,000 athletes the NCAA tracked have done. Many athletics leaders agree that the new formula provides a more accurate measure of how student athletes are succeeding in the classroom.
