Lay-midwifery became illegal in Georgia in 1991, and Midwife Michelle Adams was taken to court by Cobb County, Georgia for signing birth certificates and ordered to stop attending births in Cobb County. She reports, "Unfortunately at the time of this ruling, I had a woman who lived in Cobb County who was due in two weeks. Upon learning of my court ordered restriction she tearfully begged me to follow through with her. She had no other viable option because no obstetrician would see her so close to her due date. I felt that attending her birth was the only responsible and compassionate action I could take. This is just my level of commitment to my clients."
