It was supposed to be a busy week for announcements in the IRL.
At AutoWeek's Monday deadline, Indy Racing League drivers Vitor Meira and Tomas Scheckter each had an agreement-awaiting only signatures on the contracts-with his respective 2006 team.
Meira's deal is with Scheckter's former team, Panther Racing. Panther officials wouldn't confirm the proceedings until contracts with Honda and Meira were signed, but that figured to be a formality.
Some of Panther's hesitation stemmed from its hosting an auction at the team's Indianapolis headquarters to sell much of its memorabilia and equipment. Team officials held back two cars for the Meira endeavor, but some of the team's partners might not stick around.
Scheckter has come to terms with Vision Racing, the team owned by IRL founder Tony George. Vision becomes a two-car team with George's stepson Ed Carpenter in the other seat. The team has taken on a partner in actor Patrick Dempsey.
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing has not settled on a driver, but the names Jeff Bucknum and Tomas Enge are now being linked there.
No one is sure what to make of a new group known as Yellow Ribbon Racing. Individuals came to an Indy car race last season and are spreading good will through the media, but there is no evidence they have equipment or the infrastructure to start the proposed two-car team that honors the five branches of the U.S. military.
