Style points: Lauren graded
Ralph Lauren ("American Style,'' Jan. 30) is a genius. His remarks on business are so simple and fundamental, yet so violated by Detroit. Know your customer. One's automobile makes a statement about who you are and what you stand for. You cannot be all things to all people. Detroit, are you listening?
R. Krowech, via e-mail
Ralph Lauren is handsome, rich and has good taste in old cars. For this reader, he doesn't have an interesting or coherent thing to say about them. This interview should have been scrapped and replaced with more pictures of his gorgeous cars.

Offside opinions
In Dutch Mandel's Jan. 16 column he wrote of his first car, a '65 Mustang, "[I] slapped on an 850-cfm Holley carburetor, stiffened its shocks and went autocrossing...'' Dutch, you denoted the old hot rodder's adage when it comes to cams and carbs: "If big is good, then bigger is better, and too much is just enough.''
