PHILADELPHIA -- Beneficial Savings Bank announced today the 2005-06 Beneficial Scholars Program winners - high school seniors from the greater Philadelphia region receiving $3,000 each toward their college education.

Founded in 2003, the Beneficial Scholars Program was created in honor of the bank's 150th birthday. Since then, the program has awarded nearly $500,000 in scholarships. The initiative was open to college-bound high school seniors in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, and Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties in New Jersey.

Beneficial asked students to submit an essay about creating a program that would better their community or neighborhood. More than 600 area high school seniors from nearly 200 schools entered the competition,…
