Feb. 16--Distraught friends and relatives of Tyshawn Stinson wondered what could have been worth the death of an innocent 8-year-old boy after he was killed inside his home Wednesday, shot during a dispute between two groups of people on Detroit's near west side. Johnnie Scott, who described herself as like an aunt to Tyshawn, expressed anger at those who would open fire in a neighborhood and at a house where a child lived. She called on them to surrender to police. "He was a sweet little boy," said Scott, who was not in the area at the time of the shooting. "They're just ignorant. ... It's just senseless."
Police released few details about the nature of the incident Wednesday night, pending further investigation. Lt. Emanuel Martinez said the shooting occurred about 5 p.m. outside the house, on the corner of Third and Calvert. Witnesses said gunfire penetrated the house and struck Tyshawn. He was taken to Children's Hospital and pronounced dead. Martinez said he did not know whether the boy was still alive when he was taken from the scene.
